The Baie d'Authie lies 7km from the campsite and is a unique must-see during your break in Picardy! The natural border between the Somme and the Pas-de-Calais is nicknamed the Baie de Somme's little sister and stretches almost 2000ha from Fort-Mahon-Plage to Berck-sur-Mer. Behind its curtain of dunes is a kaleidoscope of landscapes, colours and settings that change with the tides and seasons.
Untamed nature, lunar landscapes and the feeling of being at the world's end!
Whilst taking a guided tour of the estuary, rambling-loving campers will adore the trails snaking through the vast salt marshes flooded in water at high tide (“mollières” in Picard), along the foreshore, between the damp meadows and white dunes covered in pine trees. In summer the Baie d'Authie is a sight for sore eyes as sea lavender paints the bay purple and samphire invades the salty lagoons. If you want to pick samphire then you can from June 1st to August 31st between sunrise and sunset. You can pickle it in vinegar or cook it like green beans!
Never tire of watching the seals and birds...
The highlight of your trip to the Baie d'Authie will undoubtedly be spotting harbour seals and grey seals (please do not disturb them). Lots of seals are born here every year which just goes to show how much the bay’s stars love it here. You can also spot countless bird species that have made the bay their untamed and protected haven of peace. You can see little egrets, Eurasian spoonbills, pied avocets, peregrine falcons, Eurasian sparrowhawks and storks...Just make sure you pack your binoculars!
