Beaches and seaside resorts of the Baie de Somme
From Quend-Plage-les-Pins to Cayeux-sur-Mer, not forgetting Le Crotoy and Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the Picardy coast boasts a succession of resorts from north to south, each with its own distinct identity. Choosing your beach means choosing your atmosphere.
Quend-Plage-les-Pins: a wild, unspoilt beach
While it shares the same immense 15 km ribbon of sand with Fort-Mahon, Quend-Plage cultivates a radically different atmosphere. Nestled between the dunes and a vast pine forest, it’s a“green resort” with a more confidential, family-oriented feel. The setting is more raw, conducive to disconnection: it’s precisely in this unspoilt setting that Camping Les Roses has settled.
Fort-Mahon-Plage: a lively, sporty beach
It’s the most dynamic seaside resort north of the bay. With its long sandy beach and lively nautical center, it’s home to shops, bars and summer entertainment . It’s the preferred choice for holidaymakers in search of action and urban conviviality.
Le Crotoy: a family beach facing south
Its position is unique: it’s the only beach in northern France with a southern exposure, guaranteeing maximum sunshine . Beware, however, that the tide is very strong here: it’s a bay beach (sand and mud) ideal for fishing, but less so for swimming.
Saint-Valery-sur-Somme: a historic port of call
Don’t look here to spread your towel on the sand. Saint-Valery is a medieval town of character, with cobbled streets, ramparts and a marina. A cultural and gastronomic stopover not to be missed, Saint-Valery is also the starting point for crossings of the bay and the steam train.
Cayeux-sur-Mer: the retro charm of pebbles
The resort is distinguished by its huge boardwalk (the longest in Europe) lined with 400 colorful cabins. Here, the beach is made of pebbles at high tide, revealing the sand only at low tide. A unique “Belle Époque” atmosphere for lovers of long, iodized strolls.
Ault and Mers-les-Bains: architectural cliffs
To the south, the landscape changes abruptly: sand gives way to the first chalk cliffs. Mers-les-Bains offers a spectacular seafront, with hundreds of Art Nouveau villas facing a pebble beach. Ault, meanwhile, is the “balcony over the sea”, offering breathtaking panoramas of the English Channel.

Seaside activities on the Picardy coast
The Baie de Somme is one of France’s richest destinations for seaside activities. There’s something for all ages, all levels and all tastes. Staying at Camping des Roses, close to the beach, means having privileged access to a multitude ofwater sports experiences, between land and sea. Here’s what awaits you.
Water sports in Baie de Somme
- Sand yachting: the king of activities! On the immense beaches of Quend and Fort-Mahon, the constant wind offers ideal conditions. Introductory and advanced courses available to all, for an adrenalin-filled experience.
- Sea kayaking and paddling: change your point of view! From Quend-Plage or nearby yacht clubs, glide across the water for a respectful approach to the bay. If you’re lucky, you’ll even get to share the water with seal pups.
- Kitesurfing : the Baie de Somme is a popular spot. Beginners can enjoy the shallow waters of Le Crotoy at high tide, while the vast beaches of Quend and Fort-Mahon offer ideal riding conditions at low tide. Schools and rentals available on site.
- Kite flying : the vast expanses of sand and the steady wind make our beaches a world-renowned spot. From simple diamond-shaped kites for children to high-powered traction kites for athletes, the sky is your playground.
Nature activities at the water’s edge
- Seal watching: you’re on the territory of France’s largest colony of calf seals. Watch them at low tide from the Pointe du Hourdel in the Baie d’Authie, or take a guided pirogue trip to avoid disturbing them.
- Parc du Marquenterre : just 10 minutes from the campsite, this bird sanctuary is a permanent spectacle. Thousands of migratory birds stop here every season. A rare connection with wildlife.
- Crossing the Bay on foot: the signature experience! Accompanied by a naturalist guide, walk from Le Crotoy to Saint-Valery through sand and bog. A total immersion, with your feet in the water, in the heart of the Bay’s ever-changing landscapes.
- Coastal walks : the coastal path (GR120) takes you through dune massifs, salt meadows (mollières), and even the first cliffs to the south. Take the sentier du Royon (4 km) for a nature loop between dunes and pines. Further south, the pointe du Hourdel loop is a must for its panoramic views.
- The Baie de Somme by bike : join the Vélomaritime (EV4), a safe trail that links Quend to Fort-Mahon in less than 20 minutes, or take a “slow tourism” route to Le Crotoy or Saint-Valery, without taking the car.
- Horseback riding on the beach : the Baie de Somme is the birthplace of the Henson horse, a gentle, hardy local breed. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, a ride on the beach or in the dunes at sunset is an unforgettable experience.
