Cayeux-sur-Mer beach: a natural pebble beach

Cayeux-sur-Mer has everything you need for an unforgettable holiday. The 14-kilometer-long pebble beach is a haven of peace where you can relax in total tranquillity.

The famous boardwalk, the longest in Europe, takes you back to the Belle Époque, with its colorful cabins stretching for almost 2 kilometers.

In June, the Kite Festival transforms the sky into a colorful spectacle. It’s also the perfect spot for kitesurfing, catamaran sailing and sea kayaking, thanks to the Cayeux nautical base. You can also go fishing with the kids. For a relaxing break, sit on the beach and enjoy a family picnic while admiring the scenery.

Cayeux-sur-Mer’s maritime heritage

Cayeux and the sea are inextricably linked. Just off the beach, don’t miss a visit to the Chapelle des Marins, a neo-Gothic building erected in 1850 that reflects Cayeux’s strong links with its maritime past. This neo-Gothic chapel houses a marine ex-voto in the shape of a boat suspended in the middle of the nave.

We continue our tour with the Benoit Champy, a 19th-century lifeboat classified as a historic monument. The shelter and its canoe are open to the public during the summer. An opportunity to discover the history of sea rescue on the Picardy coast.

You can also extend your walk along the white road to Hourdel Point, passing through pine forests, dunes and the Brighton lighthouse.

The Chemin de fer de la Baie de Somme steam train

A must-see in the bay. This steam train links Le Crotoy to Cayeux-sur-Mer. The “Le Grand Large” route follows the entire Bains de Mer network (27 km) through the varied landscapes of the Baie de Somme.

Where does the name Cayeux-sur-Mer come from?

Did you know? Cayeux means “pebbles” in Picardy, as the history of Cayeux-sur-Mer is closely linked to that of the pebbles that were once the town’s only resource. Pebbles, the blue gold of Cayeux-sur-Mer, were collected by hand, transported by horse or mule, then shipped to Great Britain, where they were transformed and used in the manufacture of ceramics and earthenware.
